Turn large power bills into long-term savings and recurring income.
WattExchange connects large energy users, brokers and IPPs through a transparent wheeling marketplace. Buyers lock in competitive renewable tariffs while brokers earn 15–30% of our transaction fees for the full PPA term. Currently available in South Africa only.
Depending on your client's power profile, connection type and consumption pattern, wheeling through WattExchange can reduce their electricity costs by 10% to 35% compared to current Eskom or municipal tariffs — with no capital outlay required.
- Locked-in renewable tariff below grid price
- Protection against annual Eskom increases
- No infrastructure or capex required
- Savings start from month one of the PPA
Every PPA you introduce earns you a share of WattExchange's transaction fees for the full contract term. That's recurring monthly income for 10–20 years from a single introduction.
- Once-off bonus per qualified buyer
- Monthly commission for the full PPA term
- Quarterly accelerator bonuses for high performers

For brokers
You already control the relationship and the billing data. WattExchange lets you turn that into a structured wheeling programme with transparent pricing and recurring fees.
Upfront bonuses
Earn once-off cash bonuses for every qualified buyer that signs a Buyer Agreement through you, scaled to their monthly electricity spend.
15–30% recurring commission
Get between 15% and 30% of our transaction fees on each PPA you introduce, paid monthly for the full life of the contract (typically 10–20 years). Use our calculator to see what this means in Rands.
Zero capex, low risk
No capital outlay, no performance obligation under the PPA – just reputation and relationship. We handle the complexity, you keep the client.
For buyers
Buying from private generators can be complex and risky. WattExchange makes it feel like a structured, data-driven procurement process – without running a manual tender. The minimum deal size is 750,000 kWh per month (9 GWh per year). Currently available in South Africa only.
Pre-qualified IPPs & traders
We screen suppliers for compliance, financial stability and delivery risk so you only see credible offers capable of long-term performance.
Transparent comparisons
Our platform standardises proposals, models different tariff paths and shows the impact of PPA terms vs Eskom and municipal tariffs over time.
Post-contract administration
We stay involved after signature: billing reconciliation, reporting, supplier performance and adjustments as your load changes.
Eskom connected vs Municipality connected
The type of grid connection your client has determines the wheeling process and timeline.
Eskom connected
If your electricity bill comes directly from Eskom, you are Eskom connected. These deals are typically faster to process because the wheeling framework is well established with Eskom.
Eskom connected customers can also group multiple bills and supply points together into a single deal, which can increase the total kWh volume and improve the economics for all parties.
Municipality connected
If your electricity bill shows a municipality name, you are municipality connected. These deals take longer because we first need to determine whether the municipality is in good standing with Eskom and whether they have an amended supply agreement in place that allows wheeling.
Not all municipalities currently support wheeling, so there is an additional due diligence phase before the deal can proceed.
Process & timeline
A typical WattExchange engagement runs 4–10 weeks from first discussion to signed PPA, depending on your internal approvals. Municipality connected deals may take longer due to additional supply agreement verification.

Broker & buyer FAQ
How do brokers get paid?
Brokers receive a once-off bonus when a buyer they introduced signs a Buyer Agreement, plus a 15–30% share of WattExchange's transaction fees on every PPA linked to that buyer, paid monthly for the full contract term. Use our calculator to estimate your payout.
What is the minimum deal size?
The minimum deal size is 750,000 kWh per month (approximately 9 GWh per year). This ensures the economics of the wheeling arrangement work for all parties – buyer, IPP and broker.
Does the buyer need to be on a Time of Use tariff?
Yes. The buyer's electricity bill needs to be on a Time of Use (TOU) tariff structure that shows Peak, Standard and Off-Peak consumption separately. This is standard for large power users and is required for the wheeling calculation to work accurately. If you're unsure whether your client's bill is TOU-based, we can help you check.
Is there any capital outlay for buyers?
No. Wheeling through WattExchange typically involves long-term PPAs with private generators and traders – buyers avoid capex while accessing renewable supply.
What if I already have solar installed?
Even with on-site solar, you still receive a grid bill for the balance of your consumption. As long as your remaining grid usage meets our minimum threshold of 750,000 kWh per month, there are additional savings available through wheeling. Your existing solar and a wheeling PPA can work side by side.
Can I combine multiple Eskom bills into one deal?
Yes. If you are an Eskom connected customer, you can group multiple bills and supply points together into a single deal. This can increase the total kWh volume and improve the economics for the buyer and broker alike.
What's the difference between Eskom and municipality connected?
Eskom connected customers receive their electricity bill directly from Eskom. Municipality connected customers receive theirs from a local municipality. Municipality deals take longer because we need to verify whether the municipality has an amended supply agreement that allows wheeling and whether they are in good standing with Eskom.
Is WattExchange available outside South Africa?
Not yet. WattExchange currently operates in South Africa only. We are exploring expansion into other markets in due course.
Who owns the data?
Buyers retain ownership of their raw data. WattExchange processes it only to run market processes and manage transactions, in full compliance with POPIA.
Can buyers still work with their existing advisors?
Yes. We often collaborate with internal teams and external advisors. Our platform provides the structured data and scenarios; your advisors help interpret and validate decisions.
